Abstract

Allama Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938), a philosopher, synthesizer between modernity and tradition is known as the sage of East, as he through his prose and poetry served the purpose of awakening Muslims under colonial rule during 1900s. He not only made them realize their mistakes and flaws which led them being ruled by foreign powers but also made them aware that their desire to imitate Western civilization is futile as the West is nothing but materialistic and irreligious. He asserted Muslims to take pride in their civilizational ideals and past which led the world to Renaissance. This presentation and article covers the 5th lecture of Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. This lecture is titled “The Spirit of Islamic Culture”. This particular lecture discusses the epistemological foundations of Western and Islamic Civilization and how these are different. While quoting various verses from the Quran, Iqbal highlights how revelation plays a key role in the development and evolution of civilization. Moreover he has declared the belief of Khatm-e-Nubuwwat as the most important in order to understand the Islamic Civilization.
