The objective of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was to foster regional integration and collaboration amongst South Asian countries when it was founded in 1985. The implementation of comprehensive regional programs has been impeded by enduring political divisions and historical tensions among member nations. Furthermore, the organization has not been able to work together to address urgent socio-economic concerns because of institutional limitations and a dearth of efficient dispute resolution procedures. In addition to the differences in development between member states, the lack of a formal framework for economic cooperation makes integration attempts even more difficult.
