An exploratory study of the published literature of marine organisms in the context of conservation

The importance of Halal and Haram and adopting it in life is crucial according to Islamic teachings. Plethora of literature has been produced on it in the form of books, chapters, dissertations and research articles based on the injunction of the Quran and Sunnah. The Quran has elaborated on the Halal and Haram at many instances and has declared it as the foundation of religion (Nahal 14:16 & al Maida 05:96). In the same way Hadith compilations such as Sahih Muslim, Tirmizi, Sunan Ibn Majah and many others have chapters on Halal and Haram and prohibited food items. Since this article delves into exploring the literature at length in the context of sea creatures particularly fish in perspective of halal and Haram, therefore few of the major discourses are mentioned here. “The Book on Animals,” by Imam Jahiz analyzes the species of animals, their characteristics; Ad-Damiri’s discourses on “Hayat al-Hayawan,” bring into writing the hundreds of animals and their allowance and prohibition in the context of Shafi’i jurisprudence. An important dissertation written at University of the Punjab, Lahore, in the Urdu language is the “the prohibited content in Animal Food and Islamic Law by Mubashir Husain, which explores the legal ruling on the haram content in any halal animal. Also, many articles deal with the Halal Standards, particularly on sea food and other items. In this paper the Arabic literature is studied in Urdu and English Languages. And it was clarified that there is scope for further work on this topic.This article is an effort to analyze the literature on Halal and Haram, Halal standards, and juristic difference on sea food.
