The most important trend of Islamic jurisprudence in the present age is to do ijtihad in the light of the objectives of the Shari'ah. Imam Shafi'i gave it a new dimension. Solving unwritten problems in the light of the wisdom of Allah's commands is called the objectives of Shari'ah. The objectives of the Sharia are five: protection of religion, life, intellect, race, wealth. Protection of these five objectives of Shariat is called expediency. Imam Ghazali further increased its strength. Imam Ibn Taymiyyah increased the list from five to include many more things in the objectives of the Sharia. In the subcontinent, Shah Waliullah highlighted new aspects regarding the objectives of Shariat. The objectives of the Shari'ah are neither to cause unnecessary hardship nor to create unnecessary ease for those who practice the Shari'ah, but to fulfill the commands of Allah Ta'ala according to the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala.
