Abstract

This paper discusses the English language needs of MBA student at a reputable Pakistani university. These needs were ascertained on two levels. First, by asking the students what they felt they needed to learn in their English language courses and how, to be able to better cope with their studies at university and second, by asking the teachers teaching these students what they thought the students needed to learn to increase their English language proficiency. The collected data showed that many of the language skills that students considered important were also considered imperative by their teachers. However, the perception of the students regarding their level of English language proficiency was too optimistic. Despite this optimism most students felt they would be much more motivated to learn if their concerns were heard and responded to by practical help.  The paper concludes by providing some practicable propositions based on the findings of the study. Suggestion such as the initiation of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses (pre- or in-semester) designed based on students concerns and needs analyses.
