The pursuit of knowledge has always been a defining element of human progress, particularly in Islamic civilization, where it played a crucial role in shaping intellectual and cultural advancements. However, the modern Muslim world faces significant challenges in sustaining intellectual growth while preserving its religious and cultural identity. This study explores the thoughts of Syed Abu al Ḣasan ‘Ali Nadvi, a prominent Islamic scholar, regarding the issue of intellectual stagnation and the pathways to intellectual resurgence. Through an analytical approach, this research examines Nadvi’s perspectives on the causes of stagnation in Muslim scholarship, his critique of Westernization, and his emphasis on a balanced synthesis of traditional and contemporary knowledge. His works, such as Māzā Khasira al-‘Ālam bi-Inḥiṭāṭ al-Muslimīn and Tārīkh-e-Da‘wat-o-‘Azīmat, provide profound insights into the need for intellectual revival through education, self-reformation, and adherence to Islamic principles.
Furthermore, this research paper delves into the complex interplay between traditional Islamic thought and the challenges posed by scientific development, as articulated by Nadvi. It employs an analytical lens to scrutinize his thoughts on the contemporary clash between scientific advancements and the foundational tenets of Islamic philosophy. The paper contextualizes the historical and philosophical backdrop of Nadvi's era, highlighting the rapid strides in scientific development and the ensuing intellectual challenges. Through a meticulous analysis of Nadvi's writings and speeches, the study explores his nuanced perspectives on addressing the dichotomy between faith and reason, tradition and modernity. It examines Nadvi's proposals for harmonizing scientific progress with Islamic principles, emphasizing the compatibility of the two. By assessing his viewpoints, this research seeks to provide a framework for overcoming the intellectual challenges of the Muslim world while maintaining a strong connection to its religious and cultural heritage.
